Let’s drink to a less sugary future

After much debate over the last few years the tax on sugary drinks available in our shops has been introduced both in Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland. It’s a measure that we welcome at safefood. From now on any sugar sweetened drink with 5g added sugar per 100ml is subject to tax.

What is your child drinking?

Sugary drinks are linked with weight gain and tooth decay. They include fizzy drinks, squashes, cordials, juice drinks and energy drinks. As part of our Childhood Obesity campaign one of our key messages was to replace sugary drinks with water.

Parenting challenge - keeping "treats" as treats

Just like every other parent on the island, I find it challenging to limit my child’s intake of "treat" food. My knowledge of healthy eating doesn’t always help, when treats are simply everywhere a child goes.
