Results from the Healthy Ireland Survey 2018

The Department of Health in the Republic of Ireland today published the results of the Healthy Ireland Survey 2018 (PDF). This is the fourth wave of the Healthy Ireland Survey and consists of 7,701 interviews conducted with a representative sample of the population aged 15 and older.

Findings from the 2018 survey include:

  • 34% consumed unhealthy foods at least once a day. Unhealthy food types included sweets, cakes and biscuits, salted snacks, pastries and take-aways.
  • 9% drink sugar sweetened beverages on a daily basis. These drinks are most popular amongst men and those aged 15 to 24.
  • 37% eat five or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day.
  • Those in more deprived areas are less likely to rate their health as good or very good, and more likely to have a long-term health problem.
  • The percentage of participants that consume 5 or more portions of fruit daily is lower in more deprived areas.
