Excess weight causes nearly 4% of new cancers a year worldwide

Global figures have shown that nearly four in every 100 new cancers in adults each year are attributable to high body mass index (BMI). And about two thirds of these obesity related cancers occur in Europe and North America.

The researchers analysed 2012 data on cancer incidence and mortailty for 184 countries to estimate the proportion associated with excess weight. Almost a quarter (23%) of all new obesity related cancers globally occurred in North America. Eastern Europe accounted for more than a third of all cases of cancer in Europe that were caused by excess BMI.

Cancers linked to high BMI accounted for a higher proportion (5.4%) of new cancers in women than in men (1.9%).
