Global evidence on cancer prevention

The World Cancer Research Fund have created a summary report of global evidence on cancer prevention.. This research is ongoing and the report will continue to be updated. It focuses on how diet, weight and physical activity increase or decrease cancer risk. 

About ⅓ of the most common cancers could be prevented through diet, weight and physical activity. Below are the cancer prevention recommendations from the report:

  • Be a healthy weight
  • Move more
  • Avoid high-calorie foods and sugary drinks
  • Enjoy more grains, veg, fruit and beans
  • Limit red meat and avoid processed meat
  • For cancer prevention, don't drink alcohol
  • Eat less salt and avoid mouldy grains & cereals
  • For cancer prevention, don't rely on supplements
  • ​If you can, breastfeed your baby
  • Cancer survivors should also follow these recommendations, where possible
