Less sugar sold from soft drinks in the UK between 2015 and 2018

The amount of sugar from soft drinks being sold has reduced by 30% or 4.6g per person per day between 2015 and 2018 according to a new study from the Nuffield Department of Population Health at Oxford University.

Pre-mixed spirits and cocktails high in sugar and calories

Action on Sugar highlighted this week that pre-mixed spirits and cocktails:

  • Can contain up to 9 teaspoons of sugar in a single 250ml can
  • Have been exempt from the Soft Drinks Industry Levy
  • Nine out of 10 of them have no on-pack nutritional information

The Department of Health have released the first findings from the Health Survey carried out in 2018/19 in Northern Ireland. Survey included questions relating to general health, mental health and wellbeing, antibiotics, obesity, smoking, drinking alcohol and sexual health.
