Supermarket receipts could provide nutrition information

Researchers at Birmingham City University say a new traffic light system on till receipts showing the nutritional information for an entire supermarket shop could allow people to make healthier choices about food.

The system would show the total calories, sugar, fat and salt in a person’s shopping basket on their receipt. The information would be colour coded allowing shoppers to instantly review their food shop.

A survey of shoppers found that over 50% would find nutrition information on the receipt valuable to making healthier choices.
