Effect of television viewing on life expectancy

A new study has estimated the impact of watching TV on life expectancy. Researchers used data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study and modelled the impact of changes in population average TV viewing time on life expectancy at birth.

They found that every single hour of TV viewed after the age of 25 reduces the viewer’s life expectancy by 21.8 minutes. They concluded that an Australian who spends a lifetime average of 6h/day watching TV can expect to live 4.8 years less than a person who does  not watch TV.
