Malnutrition in the elderly: Canal communities health initiative training and expo

Aim of event

The purpose of the event is to provide community health care workers working with older people with new skills that can be used to develop their own resources. Presentations will be given by dietitians and clinicians from:

  • The Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute
  • The British Dietetic Association (Northern Ireland)
  • St James’s Hospital
  • The NUTRIMAL study (UCD and HSE)
  • The MaNuEL project (UCD, UL and UCC)

There will also be a range of health information stands from both local and national community organisations throughout the day.

Bluebell Community Partnership

Tommy will be describing what they see as part of their work visiting socially isolated and economically deprived older people in the South Inner City.

Dr Michelle O’Brien

St James Hospital

Michelle will discuss malnourished patients who are presented to her in the Emergency Department and the MedEL service.

Ms Elizabeth McKnight

British Dietetic Association (NI)

Elizabeth will share her experience in residential care.

Ms Ciara Murphy

Beaumont Hospital

Ciara will discuss nutrition for those with Dementia.

Ms Margaret O’Neill

Health Service Executive (HSE)

Margaret will share insights into HSE projects.

Ms Cara Cunningham

Senior Community Dietitian

Cara will present on her peer led intervention programme. ‘Eating Well into the Future – promoting good health and nutrition for older people’.

The event will be off interest to anyone involved in delivering care for older people who are malnourished or may be at risk of becoming malnourished in the community.
