Statement from safefood, the food safety promotion board, in relation to the report from the national taskforce on obesity

16 May, 2005. safefood, the Food Safety Promotion Board strongly welcomes the comprehensive report which has been prepared by the National Taskforce on Obesity. It provides a framework for tackling the problem of obesity in Ireland and we are particularly pleased to see that the report proposes a number of initiatives, which safefood has been working on over the past three years.

We welcome the multifaceted strategy, as recommended by the taskforce, in particular, the acknowledgement that industry has a responsibility in the prevention of obesity in Ireland.

We believe that there are a number of important areas where action could beneficially be taken immediately. One such area is in the “marketing and advertising of products that contribute to weight gain, in particular those aimed at children”. We fully support the report’s recommendations in relation to the advertising of foods to children.

A coordinated approach, at senior level within central Government will be required in order to quickly implement the recommendations of the report and safefood is looking forward to contributing to the implementation of the strategy.
