Exam season is always a challenging time. We're all looking for ways to achieve the best result possible, and when I'm studying, healthy eating often slides way down on my priority list.

I often find myself reaching for snacks like chocolate and sweets (that are high in sugar and fat) instead of a healthier, more nutritious option, but the wrong food choices often have negative impacts on your concentration and abilities leaving you feeling sluggish, jittery and burnt out.

On the other hand, the right snacks and drinks can give you energy, make you more alert and get you through the long studying and exam hours.

Here are some of my healthy alternatives to help you through exam season.

Greek yoghurt and berries

Greek yoghurt contains calcium and berries contain Vitamin C. This is definitely a healthier option than reaching for the biscuit tin!

Peanut butter with fruit and veggies

a jar with hummus, carrot sticks and celery sticks insideThis is a tasty and simple snack. My favorite combos have to be peanut butter on celery sticks and apple wedges!

Avocado toast

Use whole meal bread here as it is high in fibre which makes you feel fuller for longer. This feeling of fullness will help you curb those mid-afternoon sugar cravings.

Cheese strings

Cheese strings, it's a fun way to distract yourself from your studies for a quick snack break, just don't bite into it –part of me dies when I see people do this. You peel it. That's why it's stringy. And last, but not least...


Fizzy drinks are high in sugar and have no health benefits whatsoever. Dehydration can make you feel irritated and tired, so drink lots of water while studying. Just don't drink too much before your exam, chances are you'll need to use the bathroom later on!

Snacks are important, but also don’t forget to take regular study breaks, like going for a walk, to help you on your way to 60 minutes of physical activity a day.
