Why media literacy is a food skill

As part of the #BeMediaSmart campaign, I talked to safefood’s Dr Aileen McGloin about why the healthy eating and food safety body developed MediaWise - a primary school teaching resource designed to provide kids with media literacy skills.

Q. Why does safefood believe media literacy is a food skill?

A. "safefood’s research shows that children as young as three see over 1,000 ads for unhealthy food each year. And recent research from the UK shows that the majority of food advertising during family TV viewing time was for unhealthy food.

So in this context, children’s understanding of the media and advertising is a food skill."

Q. So what is MediaWise?

A. "MediaWise is an educational resource for primary school children. It’s aimed at children from junior infants, right up to 6th class, and is designed to provide them with the media literacy skills they need to navigate all the media messages they receive every day."
