This resource has been designed to help you understand why food colours are added to certain foods. Many people have concerns about the presence of food additives in general (including food colours) in their food. Here, we provide up-to-date information on those food colours that are currently considered safe and therefore permitted for use in food in the European Union. Like all such food additives, the colours have been given an ‘E’ number. You can find out about individual food colours in the index by searching by name and E number, the associated colour or by whether the colour is natural or artificial.
