Mark's Operation Transformation - 3 months on

In this inspiring blog post, Mark tells us how his transformation has continued since Operation Transformation ended.

Can you tell us a little bit about how life has gone for you since the show ended?

It was a relief to say goodbye to the cameras and settle back into normal life. There was a lot of catching up on the home and work front and I was interested to see how I could incorporate the healthy eating into daily life. I've managed to do that while not sticking as rigidly to Aoife's food plans as I did throughout the show but continued to lose weight each week.

What were your initial goals when you became a leader? Do you feel you achieved these?

The initial goal was to embrace the food and fitness plans 100% and I did this with vigour. Going from a very low level of fitness to being able to run the whole lot of the 5 km in the Phoenix Park in February was a real highlight and of course losing 2st 9lbs during the 7 week show was very satisfying.

How has your weight been since the show ended?

I've managed to lose weight steadily since the end of the show and have lost a further 1st 8lbs which means I have lost almost four and a half stone since the year started. The weight loss has understandably been a lot slower but I am more than happy with the progress.

Have you found it easy or difficult to stay on track?

I've a different attitude to staying on track nowadays with looking at everything as "choices" - if I choose to have food that is not on-plan, that's ok as long as I don't make those "choices" every time.  I really want to adapt healthy eating into normal life and would opt for careful portion sizes of normal food rather than cooking a special recipe every evening. There have been some fundamental changes that have been maintained in the household with brown pasta, rice and bread being common place. We've continued to use Aoife's recipes as the basis of a lot of meals.

What has motivated you to keep going?

I really want to lose more weight and maintain the healthy lifestyle. I've enjoyed being able to take part in various 5k and 10k runs and I intend this to continue. I always saw the show as being the start of a healthy future and merely an intervention so finding motivation to continue was never in question.

What are the things that have worked well for you in terms of maintaining a healthy lifestyle?

I’ve continued watching my food intake. Maintaining the good habits established during the 7 weeks has been the secret to continued weight loss.  Ensuring a daily calorie deficit and maintaining exercise at least 3 or 4 times per week has been the key. I've set on-going smaller goals such as the Dundalk 10k which I ran from beginning to end in April. Myself and my wife are also just back from a week long walk on the Camino de Santiago in Spain which was a wonderful experience.

Has your transformation influenced your partner/kids/family/friends or work colleagues?

The whole family were so supportive throughout the 7 weeks of the show, they have enjoyed maintaining the healthy lifestyle and are enjoying having a more energetic "me" around the place. Since the show finished, I have met a lot of people through work and socially who have said that they have found inspiration to embark on healthy lifestyles.

And finally, looking back, what is the best thing that came out of your time on Operation Transformation?

Without doubt, the continued weight loss and ability to take up jogging have been highlights. It's nice to think that I have inspired others to make changes in their lives but selfishly, I am thrilled to have made changes that will serve me well for the rest of my life.
