Who is the biggest waster?

As part of our Food Waste campaign we provided diaries for you to print out and fill in. Here in the office, four of us decided to join in. The results are in…

Were you surprised by anything?

I was more surprised with the cost than the quantity of my weekly waste. It shows how expensive the fruit juices and yoghurts are. I always have vegetables leftover as I find it hard to buy the right quantity and to keep them fresh.

What did you learn?

To keep a closer eye on the use by dates. To plan my vegetable shopping better.

Were you surprised by anything?

Because I am usually away from home at weekends my rubbish bin is full to the brim on Mondays. Milk and bread are the usual food waste culprits as they are past their use by date.

What did you learn?

When doing my shopping at the start of the week I don’t factor in the Thursday night takeaway I sometimes succumb to... While I am able to freeze the chicken fillets I had intended to eat I end up throwing out the broccoli and mushrooms!

Were you surprised by anything?

I guess it was how the cost added up – I was only throwing out small amounts, but there was some food wasted every day.

What did you learn?

I always cook too many potatoes! Unpredictable children’s appetites make for a good bit of waste; take a bit more care with how food is stored in the fridge so that foods with closer use by dates are near the front.

Were you surprised by anything?

I thought I was not wasteful at all and was surprised at the amount I threw out, be it small but €1.00 per week is still €52 per year that I would not throw in the bin!

What did you learn?

When I’ve busy days ahead and know I’m going to be away from home, buy less in advance of these days – e.g. only buy 1 ltr of milk rather than 2lts.
