Summertime and the living is easy…

After hibernating for what seems like most of the year I really am looking forward to donning my brightly coloured florals over the coming months (rain, hail or snow) and in preparation of this I am kick-starting my healthy eating and fitness regime… TODAY!! Anyone else in the same boat?

1. This morning I measured my weight – you can do this too either on the scales or by measuring your waist (have a look at this video first though – you wouldn’t believe how many people think their waist is where your trousers lie - it’s not). Try and measure yourself once a week, at the same time - seeing the change will help keep you motivated.

2. I think the next most important thing is to get some support… either from friends or your family. Having someone with you is much more enjoyable than doing it on your own… you can use this time to catch up on the week gone past or plan nights out to look forward to! I’ve convinced two of my buddies to take up jogging and while we’re nattering away about the latest trials and tribulations in our lives we’ve nearly clocked up 5K! It’s equally important to have good support at home… so when you are trying so hard to be good your partner knows that biscuits are banned from the house!!!!

3. Have you ever kept a food diary? To be honest I didn’t understand the point of them until I gave it a go. By jotting down all I have to eat and drink I quickly realised that a. I was snacking too much and b. I was eating very little fruit and vegetables. I’ve started taking some fruit now when feeling peckish - two birds, one stone! Have a look at your eating habits and see if there are any changes you could make.

4. And hey, apparently it’s already summer? You wouldn’t think it would you with the weather outside but don’t let it deter you… put on the raincoat and get out and about or else look for activities which you can do indoors. I recently tried a class of spinning… yes my knees nearly went from under me but it was good fun and I felt great after it. Search for events and activities near you on Get Ireland Active  (for those living in ROI) and check out Get A Life Get Active (for those of you living in Northern Ireland).

5. Finally, don’t forget to reward yourself for all your hard work, but instead of indulging in chocolate, sweets and crisps buy a new book or spend time catching up with friends. I love to treat myself by planning my next road trip.

There is nothing like a bit of motivation! You may have holidays planned, birthdays or a wedding or two this summer so don’t wait too long to get started! Unfortunately, this year I have nada… so instead I am living vicariously through other people’s holiday plans… please feel free to share!
