How to stay motivated after Operation Transformation

You were there for the tears and the joy, the struggles and the triumphs. Operation Transformation took us on journey with five brave people who turned their lifestyles, and their lives, around in 7 short weeks. Many of us took that journey with them.

The show is a truly amazing national entity at this stage that offers real role models, superb meal and activity plans, and inspires entire communities to get out there and get active.

When it’s all over, it can feel like there’s a big gap in its place and after 7 weeks of hard work, it’s understandable that motivation can fade. That’s why we thought it might be a good time to offer tips on staying motivated.

7 ways to stay motivated

  1. If you set goals back in January, go back to those. If you didn’t, now is a good time to do so. These could be around reaching a certain weight, or a special date or event. You’ll find more tips here
  2. Get back to monitoring your weight once a week, what you eat and how active you are. You can do this the old-fashioned way, with paper and pencil, use an app on your phone or we have some online diaries that might help too.
  3. Fill your life with cues and triggers to be healthy. Pop your exercise sessions in your calendar. Put your goal in full view on your fridge. Remove unhealthy food from the house and keep healthy options handy.
  4. Keep learning about healthy eating. It feels good to have new food skills, especially practical ones like making healthy meals for your and yours. Try new recipes from the Operation Transformation plans or check out safefood’s recipe section  for ideas.    
  5. Find activities you enjoy. You may not be a gym person but love walking. If your efforts to be active to date are not working out, try something new.
  6. Get support. Tell your friends and family that you want to keep going with your goal to lose weight, or that you just want to keep going with this healthier lifestyle. Ask them to help you. If you were part of an Operation Transformation walking group, there’s no reason for that to stop. Just keep going. If you did it in January on those cold dark evenings, you can definitely do it now!
  7. Reward yourself. Incentives can be a nice way to help with motivation. If you reach a mile-stone, or even just have a week where you are happy that you stuck with your plan to eat healthy and pounded the pavements as you intended, give yourself a small non-food treat. It could be a movie, a magazine, new music – whatever the budget allows.
