This research was commissioned by safefood to examine the socio-economic differences in food and nutrient intakes which exist on IOI, and also to investigate the attitudinal factors which contribute to these differences.

A comparative study of thermophilic campylobacter isolates of clinical, food and pet origin

Recent research, funded by safefood, has indicated a high occurrence of the food poisoning bacterium, Campylobacter in raw poultry, particularly chicken, with 49.9% of retail samples of raw chicken testing positive for the bacterium.

Consumer food safety knowledge, microbiology & refrigeration temperatures in domestic kitchens

This study examined consumer food safety knowledge on the island of Ireland. Domestic refrigerators were tested for the presence of a range of pathogenic bacteria.  Irish consumers displayed a considerable lack of knowledge about correct refrigeration temperatures and proper hygiene procedures to prevent cross contamination in the kitchen.

A study of food safety knowledge, microbiology and refrigeration temperatures in restaurant kitchens on the island of Ireland

The study found that, in general food handling practices in the restaurants were good. The research was commissioned by safefood and conducted in 2002 by Teagasc and the University of Ulster. It involved a total of 200 restaurants throughout the island of Ireland.

Standard of healthy living on the island of Ireland

Ireland experiences marked social inequalities in health, seen in the variation in health outcomes, especially mortality, across the different social groupings. This looked at the pattern of household and individual food purchasing and food availability information across a range of socio-demographic and socio-economic household types on the island of Ireland.

Young people and food: adolescent dietary beliefs and understandings

This is a major piece of research carried out by a project team led by Dr. Karen Trew, Queen's University Belfast, and funded by safefood. This research provides fresh insight into the dichotomy between young people's knowledge of food safety and nutrition, and their behaviour.

The research, conducted by a team led by Dr. Mary McCarthy, UCC, and funded by safefood, provides evidence that while many consumers know the 'good' practices in food hygiene, every day practice varies considerably.

Acute gastroenteritis in Ireland, north and south - A study of general practitioners

The principal aim of this study was to describe general practitioners management of patients with acute infectious gastroenteritis.  As the GP is the main health provider and point of contact fir patients, we decided to examine in more detail the burden of disease presenting to GPs and the response of GPs to the problem.

Strategic development review of health board food control laboratories

Mr Brian Lenihan, T.D. Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children has been officially presented with the Strategic Developmental Review of Health Board Food Control Laboratories Report. The key recommendation of the report is the move from a fragmented activity to the establishment of a single laboratory service, which will be known as the Food Safety Laboratory Service (FSLS).

A review of coccidiostat residues in poultry

This wide ranging report covers information and findings from aspects in the chain from feed to harvesting, delivery and manufacturing within the broiler industry on the island of Ireland. The published findings are the result of extensive consultation and research.

Acute gastroenteritis in Ireland, north and south: a telephone survey

The telephone survey of almost 10,000 households was carried out over 12 months and found that in any four-week period 4.5% of the population will have an episode of acute gastroenteritis. If extrapolated to the entire population this means there are approximately 3.2 million episodes of acute gastroenteritis each year.
