What to look for when buying fish

Fish is delicious, versatile and one of the most nutritious foods we can eat.  We should aim to eat two portions of fish a week, including one portion of oily fish.

Tips for picking up fish

Whether you’re buying from a fishmonger or the supermarket fish counter, don’t be afraid to ask for help.  Your fishmonger will be happy to advise on cost, cooking methods and much more.

Make sure any fish you bring home is safe to eat by looking out for the following:

Whole fish:

  • Eyes should be bright and not sunken
  • Scales should have a moist, firm appearance
  • Fresh fish should have a pleasant sea aroma

Fillets of fish:

  • Unpackaged fillets should smell fresh and look glossy

Frozen fish:

  • Check that the fish or shellfish is frozen solid
  • Make sure packaging is undamaged

And make sure to store your fish correctly.  Fresh fish will keep for a day or two after purchase, or according to the use-by date if pre-packaged, if you store it in a fridge at 5ºC or below.  If you are concerned about the smell, keep it in a sealed container.

Tips for healthier fish

  • Go for fresh, unprocessed fish more often that battered or processed fish.
