safefood advises consumers are not at risk from presence of horse or pig DNA in beef products

Wednesday 16 January, 2013. safefood would like to reassure consumers that the presence of horse or pig DNA in beef products is a food quality issue and that there is no food safety risk associated with these products.

While the presence of horse meat in itself does not represent a food safety risk and is routinely consumed in the EU, the source of this constituent is unclear and on-going investigations are being undertaken by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI), the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) and the food businesses involved.

Further details on the products involved are available on the FSAI website and safefood will continue to monitor the situation.
