safefood Operation Transformation roadshow to visit Kildare

Wednesday 06 February, 2013. Newbridge in Kildare is the next location for the safefood Operation Transformation roadshow, which is visiting five locations across the Island of Ireland in January and February.

safefood, the agency responsible for promoting healthy eating and food safety on the island of Ireland, is the sponsor of the popular RTE programme and their roadshows are providing practical healthy eating advice, tips on being active and motivation for people looking to kick start their own transformation.

The fourth roadshow will be at Whitewater Shopping Centre in Newbridge on Saturday 9th February with a range of activities running from 12pm to 3.30pm and everyone is welcome to come along.

The aim of the roadshow is to help people get involved in healthy eating and physical activity in a fun, interactive and engaging way.

safefood experts will be on hand to provide practical advice on topics like portion sizes, calorie swaps and healthy eating for long-term weight loss and there will be games, quizzes and much more. Dieticians from the Irish Nutrition & Dietetic Institute (INDI) are lending their support at all the venues too.

Also on the roadshow menu is the opportunity to take part in a free workout with the programme’s very own fitness expert, Karl Henry, and you can meet and support Operation Transformation leader, Monica Percy from Ballon, Co. Carlow.

“The annual safefood sponsored Operation Transformation has really become a January landmark and our roadshows make it all the more local. The emphasis on portion sizes, and being active is key to long-term weight loss”, commented Dr Cliodhna Foley-Nolan, Director, Human Health and Nutrition, safefood.

“With 2 in every 3 people currently overweight, the example of the participants in the programme, their supporters and groups around the Island of Ireland are an inspiration in tackling what is a serious public health issue and I encourage everyone to come along, get some really useful advice and have some fun too!”

The safefood roadshow is a great way to involve even more people in Operation Transformation. We want people to come along to their local roadshow,”

said personal trainer and fitness expert Karl Henry.

“I’ll be running ‘gentle’ group workout sessions suitable for anyone to join at each location and on hand to chat to people about becoming more active.  Nothing like a spot of exercise to give you more energy for shopping and becoming more active generally!”

I’m really excited about being a leader on Operation Transformation and flying the flag for Carlow and Kildare,”

said Monica Percy from Ballon, Co. Carlow. “I know it’s going to be tough but it will be worth it in the end. I’ll be at the roadshow in Whitewater Shopping Centre in Newbridge and would be delighted to meet people for a chat and all the words of encouragement they can offer.  There are so many other people like me who want to lose weight and become healthier and I think this roadshow will help people get on the right track.”

For those following Operation Transformation, there will be helpful resources available on safefood’s website safefood.eu and Facebook page facebook.com/safefood.eu.
