Thursday 28th May 2009: safefood is reminding consumers to follow good food safety practice when cooking food on barbecues over the summer months as new research reveals that one in five people do not know how to check if their burgers, sausages or chicken are cooked properly on a barbecue (1).
June 8th 2009: 41% of Northern Ireland’s over 60s put their health at risk by not checking the ‘use by’ date on food labels according to a survey(1) released today by safefood and the Food Standards Agency Northern Ireland (FSANI). The survey marks the start of National Food Safety Week which runs from 15th to 21st June 2009.

With 64% of adults classified as either overweight or obese [1], and 22% of children aged between 5-12 years classified as either overweight or obese [2], there is an urgent need to make people aware of the dangers of obesity.

July 24th 2009: safefood is encouraging consumers to think about food safety when cooking food on barbecues over the summer months. This reminder comes as research reveals that 67% of those surveyed did not mention cutting into the centre of burgers, sausages or chicken to check that they were properly cooked [1].
30 July 2009: A new review of imported foods on the island of Ireland has revealed that 54% of consumers are concerned about imported foods from non-European Union (EU) countries. The review undertaken by safefood also revealed that 43% of consumers were concerned about food imports from within the EU.
Following media reports that ham sandwiches should not be included in children’s lunchboxes, safefood would like to reassure consumers that ham can be included on the lunch menu on occasion.
Tuesday, August 25th 2009: A new report [1] which gives insights into what parents of young children and teenagers themselves think about drinks has revealed that parents do not count drinks as part of their children’s daily food consumption. The report, commissioned by safefood, also revealed that parents and teenagers shared a number of similar concerns but had very different purchasing patterns in terms of where they bought drinks, what drinks they bought, and also what influenced them in making these decisions [2].

The campaign entitled “Shake the Salt habit” is designed to raise awareness among consumers that our diets are still too high in salt and that the majority of dietary salt is from processed foods such as processed meats, sauces and bread.
