Monday 9th June, 2008: A survey released today by the Food Standards Agency Northern Ireland (FSANI) and safefood to mark National Food Safety Week (9 June - 13 June 2008) revealed that a quarter (24%) of people in Northern Ireland risk food poisoning when doing their grocery shopping.

13 March 2008: safefood in collaboration with the Food Safety Authority of Ireland and the Food Standards Agency Northern Ireland has launched a new guide to food supplements, with research revealing that one in four adults on the island of Ireland are currently taking food supplements(1). Entitled “Thinking of Taking Food Supplements? ” the leaflet is an informative guide to what food supplements are and what they do.

The review undertaken by safefood also highlights that consumers have enhanced confidence in the beef food chain on the island and the industry enforcement controls that are in place.

1st February 2008: A new Advisory Board has been appointed to safefood, the all-island agency promoting food safety and nutrition messages. The new board is comprised of twelve members with multidisciplinary backgrounds including a chef, a horticulturist, a restaurateur and a cheesemonger.
21 November 2008: Earlier today, safefood and West Cork LEADER Co-operative launched Taste Buds, a new interactive education resource for eight to ten year olds. This teacher-led CD resource, launched by Minister Batt O’Keeffe, T. D. Minister of Education & Science, will teach children about the origins of their food and the importance of healthy eating and physical activity using five, fun animated characters.

Tuesday 1st July 2007: safefood has teamed up with Award winning chef Neven Maguire to encourage consumers to follow good food safety practices when preparing and cooking food. New safefood research revealed that when preparing food, 52% of people chopped lettuce on a chopping board that had been used for raw meat without washing it first. This practice is a cause for concern as it can potentially expose the consumer to the perils of food poisoning.
5th November 2008: safefood research has revealed that social stresses which are part of daily life for many people from low socio-economic backgrounds are a major contributor to an unhealthy diet. The consequences of an unhealthy diet for longer term health include heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and some cancers. The research was launched at the safefood Food Poverty Conference in Dundalk earlier today.

This unique study which will identify the DNA of the bugs that cause gastroenteritis and food poisoning, is being rolled out across the island of Ireland north and south and in tandem with a UK wide study.

14th May 2008: safefood has launched a new collaborative study into Infectious Intestinal Disease (IID) at the All-island Infectious Intestinal Disease Conference currently taking place at Clontarf Castle in Dublin. 30% of all infectious diseases reported to the Disease Surveillance Centres in Dublin and Belfast are caused by a range of infectious agents, known to be transmissible through food. The IID study will be carried out in tandem with a UK wide study, conducted in collaboration with the UK Food Standards Agency, and will be the first in the world to use DNA methods to comprehensively estimate the burden of foodborne infections.

The training which is the first of its kind will help Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) and Catering Lecturers to increase awareness of food allergen control in the catering industry. Food allergy is an emerging hazard for the catering industry and it is estimated that up to 3% of the total population are living with a food allergy.
