01 May 2007: Experts in public health nutrition from the UK and Ireland gathered in Dublin today to highlight the need for a sustained, international approach to achieve dietary change. The conference, jointly sponsored by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI), the Food Standards Agency Northern Ireland (FSANI) and the all-island agency safefood heard of the latest developments on key nutrition topics including obesity, nutritional deficiency, salt intake, fortification and food poverty.

Local consumers still not eating their greens

12 February 2008: While people here are aware of the health benefits of a diet rich in fruit and vegetables, consumers are still eating significantly less than they should. Only 21% of adult men and 19% of women on the island of Ireland are meeting the current World Health Organisation’s target of ‘five a day’², with young children eating even less.

31 May 2007: safefood is urging consumers to be extra vigilant when cooking meats on the barbecue that have been minced, skewered or rolled such as burgers, sausages and kebabs.  These types of meats should be cooked thoroughly and never served rare or pink in the middle either from the barbecue or more traditional cooking methods.

5th March 2007: Earlier today, safefood launched a practical and innovative healthy eating wallchart to help parents and their children adopt healthier eating habits. The safefood Kid’s Food Challenge is designed to provide parents with an alternative reward system in their children’s diet other than unhealthy treat foods. The National Children’s Nutrition Survey revealed that 70% of parents who felt that nutrition was important to health found difficulty in providing a healthy diet for their child.

4th April 2007: Results of a survey commissioned by safefood have shown that eggs produced on the island of Ireland are almost totally free from Salmonella. Just two egg samples from over 5, 000 samples surveyed contained Salmonella in the shell. No egg contents were contaminated.
