Eating out with kids

There was a launch during the week of a scheme to help encourage children to eat a little healthier when eating out in a restaurant. It's called "Kids Size Me" and at its heart is a label on the menu to show that a restaurant offer a child-friendly portion of their adult menu.

Speaking as a Dad, I can safely say I've been amazed at the size of some of the "kids menu" portions offered to my lads in restaurants - as an adult, I would have struggled to eat some of them so I can't imagine what all that food would have looked like to a six year old.

And as a parent, I know how much of a challenge it can be when eating out with kids; the last thing they want to do is sit in one place and wait for food. Some restaurants can accommodate families far better than others and are geared that way. And in fairness, if part of their customer base is parents with kids, then it makes sense to satisfy that demand as best as possible. Whatever your business, repeat customers are your lifeblood.

I've got friends working in the trade and I know first  hand the presssures they face and how that can affect them and their own families.

And there's lots of reasons why and where parents eat out with their kids - price, convenience and kid-friendly are on my wishlist. And hoping they serve food the lads will (or might) eat.

As a parent, I also need to do my bit by keeping at it and encouraging the guys to keep trying new foods as much as possible so they learn about their food.

So something that begins to help me as a parent to get my kids to try to eat a little healthier when out and to start to move away from the wallpaper for our children that is something-deep-fried-with-chips, that's a positive in my view.

I'm off next week with the lads so my colleague Aileen will be in the blog seat.

Enjoy your weekend
